Co-ordinator's introduction for 20190

Dr William Robertson

This website details the projects available for the honours project in 2019. It is updated regularly with new projects so please check back often.

Access to the database for staff and students

If you are a staff member and would like to add or join projects, please contact the course coordinator and provide your staff ID.

If you are a student who wishes to vote on a project for an upcoming project round, you must first enrol in ALL of the appropriate courses; e.g., for the honours project you need to be enrolled in both MECH ENG 4143A and 4143B. After you have enrolled you will gain access to the site the next time that the coordinator refreshes the student list from Access Adelaide. Please get in touch if it seems that this hasn't happened.

Voting for projects

Please vote for a number of projects using the interface provided. Rank your desired projects first by preference (1, 2, 3, etc.). You can also assign a "care factor" to each project, which indicates your enthusiasm for each project. For example, you might find two projects which you both find equally compelling. In that case you would still have to choose which to rank 1st and 2nd, but you would assign both a care factor of 10 to indicate that you would be just as happy with your second preference.

When voting on group projects, for best chance of success form your groups in advance and contact the supervisor directly explaining who is in your group. If you vote as an individual for a project that needs a larger group, you are unlikely to be chosen.

I encourage you to contact supervisors directly after you have voted for their project. Note that the supervisors for each project make the final decision about which students they take on. Most supervisors will not accept students into a project if they have not had some communication from the students in advance.

After a supervisor has accepted you into a project, it is poor form to back out. Please choose wisely. If you are not accepted into your first choices, please do revise your selection and continue to contact more supervisors. The course coordinator cannot automatically allocate students into projects; it is your responsibility to find a project.

Information about projects

In the project lists, the projects marked with an asterisk (*) are sponsored by industry. The budgets for these projects are generally considerably larger than the internal projects. The exact details will be negotiated on a case by case basis. These projects also have the additional benefit of direct contact with industry, providing valuable experience and future contacts.

If there is something you would like to do and it is not listed below then you are more than welcome to suggest it as a project. If you do so, then you will need to find an academic who is willing to supervise the project. You need ensure that the project is feasible within the time, resources and cost constraints.

If you approach an external company to sponsor your project, there are intellectual property (IP) and costs (for the sponsor) that need to be considered. Please discuss this with your intended supervisor and/or the course coordinator before coming to any concrete agreement with an external partner.
